Subject: AMDPCALC - performance problems
 
We are having preformance problems running AMDPCALC.sqr, it currently processess about 30 assets/hour. I think that the problem resides in the SQL that goes against both open_trans and book tables because when we run a business unit with only 1 book we get results of 500 assets/hour. Has anyone run across performance problems with AMDPCALC in the past. Any feedback on your solutions would be very helpfull.

You have a number of options for getting data into the system, but all of them are tedious.  But that's in keeping with the iterative, detail-oriented, painful nature of mapping old records to new representations.

Import Manager is probably the slowest, but provides the most comprehensive edits.  If you have significant data hygiene problems and a low volume of data, it's sometimes the best choice.  More often, you're better off exporting the data from the legacy system, performing whatever translations and substitutions are required (either in a staging table using SQR, or right in the ASCII files using Perl), and then import using the RDBMS tools.  Oracle has a facility called SQL Loader which is quite fast, but your data needs to be prepared as ASCII files.  Other platforms have other tools.

There are also a few tools out on the market now which are specializing in data migration which we looked at recently.  A new one called the Reliant Bridge for PeopleSoft runs very quickly and automatically runs through basic PeopleSoft edits such as required fields and prompt table lookups.  I think we will end up using this one if they get it GA in time for our deadlines(the new release is Beta right now).

There are also other programs which generate SQR code or similar.  Prices can vary wildly, so it really depends on how much data you will be trying to move.

The batch components of a PeopleSoft applications consists of SQR’s, COBOL, PS/Query, Mass Change, and Application Engine. PeopleSoft identifies these as ‘Non Comparable Objects’, subsequently these components are not included in the PeopleSoft upgrade process. 

The process of upgrading the batch components of the application consists of the following steps:

Identification of customized and added objects in the current production application 
Identification of changes to data structures (PeopleSoft Records and Fields) in the new release 
Identification of data structure changes in the new release that are referenced within the customized and added objects 
Determining the correct action to be performed to upgrade the batch module to the new release 
Upgrade batch modules and test 
The above process is fairly tedious and time-consuming which can affect the overall timeline of the upgrade project.

We have developed a solution for this process called "UBAS" (upgrad batch analysis solution) it automates the process.

I have had a very strange problem on my PC.  We basically use 2 databases, a production database (lets call it PROD), and a development database (DEV).  I am able to log in to PROD via PeopleTools; when I try to log in to DEV i get the following error message: "SQL Error. Stmt #2 Error Position: 0 Return: 8200 - Cannot connect to requested database".  I am able to access both databases in SQL Server 6.5, our backend.  I am also able to access both databases from another PC.  its only my PC that has this problem.  I've checked all the configuration files against our standard config and everything seems to match. Can someone help?

I Think i can help u. Follow the analysis
1. This problem could be with PS or with ur SQL Server client.
2. Is ur PS installation a 3 tire or a 2 tire one.
3. If it is a 2 tire one check up the ODBC Setup. Then check up the isqlw connectivity. Check up the logon domain and the previlages.
4. If it is a 3 tire setup, check ur application server's configuration and ur PCs tuxido configuration.
5. Even then if the problem persists, check the network.
6. If the network is Ok, try browsing ur database server and app server. If ur able to do this, the problem is in the sql client side. u can safely reinstall the sql server client side with out effecting the files. If u do this u can be confident of regaining the connectivity.
7. If nothing works, go the microsoft way. backup ur files in PC. Reinstall the OS. Reinstall Applications. restore ur files.

Try using Microsoft Access as a data migration tool. It will ease the job if the data volume is not beyond say 20000 rows in a table. only problem exceeding this is that u may have to do the migration in 2 steps

PeopleSoft change control can be split into 2 areas : Change Control for objects within Peopletools e.g PeopleCode. PeopleSoft provides change control for that.

For objects like SQRs , SQCs etc - u can use any software that u are currently using for your change control on the network

Good Morning

We're starting to develop plans for converting data from our legacy COBOL/VSAM applications to PeopleSoft Financials 7.5.
The big issues are determining the best way to map and move our current data into the new systems, and integrating some of this data back to the mainframe to be used by other applications.

My research so far has highlighted 3 products: Convoy, SmartDB, and Reliant.  The other option of course is to develop the needed processing in house.

Any experiences you've had with any of these, or other products would be appreciated. I'm also interested in any war stories you can share about efforts to do this yourself.

We need to find a PeopleSoft compliant/approved SW package
which can track moving expenses & reimbursements for employees
we move.  We move ~ 3000 a year, growing faster than we like or anticipate.

Currently, this is excruciatingly labor intensive.  We use a package to track this, keying all year long, thean at the end of the year, we produce reports which are keyed into General Ledger, then into payroll. This is ugly.

Does anything exist?

The firm that I work with has experience with both Convoy and a firm called OnDisplay.  Both have excellent migration tools that are designed to simplify, and hopefully, expedite the conversion process from a Legacy Systems to PeopleSoft (or others).  Obviously, they are contingent on how "clean" your existing data is, however, they do take most of the guess work out of the conversion and offer a more drag and drop approach to conversion and interface work.  Good luck with your conversion and overall project.  Feel free to email me if you need any assistance in contacting either vendor or wish to discuss either in more detail.

Found this answer to an earlier posting on PS-COBOL.  Thought it might help.

PeopleSoft wrote many (most?) of their batch routines in MicroFocus COBOL. They have a single body of source code for all platforms, due to a combination of "vanilla" coding and a generic SQL interface module. If you've ever done any COBOL coding on any platform any time since Grace Hopper was a LtCdr, you'll be able to deal with it. If you're working with the HRMS product, check the PeopleBook "Designing Your Payroll System," in the chapter titled "Customizing PeopleSoft Payroll Batch Processes" for more information.

I have heard of this too!  We are currenlty setuping up the same metaFrame Client.  Make sure the cache files reside on the actual desktop logging in and not on the MetaFrame Client!!

Ahhh... That makes things a little more difficult. Have you thought about creating a run control record with a from date and two date field? You could pass the OPRID/RC ID/DATE FIELDS by creating a panel and process definition. This would also require adding the record to the query. In the criteria add the following bind variables. OPRID, RUN_CNTL_ID, DATE_FROM DATE_TO. You can then pass these from the panel to the query in a process definition by appending the parameters. Let me know if you need more detail.

One way is to alter the record/view that your Crystal/Query uses to include (ie join) the required fields from the runcontrol.  You'll also need to parameterize the WHERE clause to accept the RUNCNTLID (from Proc Sched) so that you dont end up with a huge Cartesian Product.

Then the View that your crystal uses will 'see' the required fields.

Not pretty; but it works.

We have been using a product called Optimal Application Expert from Optimal Networks. It has been extemely useful in allowing us both to predict the applications performance and troubleshoot. Has some great visualizations of how the application is behaving and where to drill down to resolve the problems - client, server, network.

Make sure you have the proper configuration in ODBC 32.  You must have the databases defined under User DSN for Crystal to work in PeopleSoft otherwise you will get the access denied error.

We are trying to use Workflow Administrator to import Lotus Notes information through message agent.  We have it set up as indicated in PeopleBooks, however we keep running into an error in PSNOTES, which states "access violation in PSNETAPI.DLL".  Unfortunately, there is no real help availiable. 

We are running PeopleTools 7.5 on a WinNT box.

If you have PeopleSoft installed on a Citrix Server WTS, You don't have to install Notes on this server.  Just be sure to add the C:\windows directory to your PATH for the user id logging into the Citrix server.  By doing this, you are able to find the notes.ini file when sending outbound forms in PS using Notes.  I have completed testing this on both 2 and 3 Tier using the Citrix server to run PS and the user workstation running Lotus Notes.

Answered my own question this time.
If you need help with Notes/WorkFlow/Outbound-Inbound Forms for 2 or 3 Tier, please contact me.

I think I can help you out with this. At the highest level, the check is to look for a MDL file. 
If MDL is available then you are close to getting your MDC.

->Open the MDL in Cognos Transformer. Check for the query. Is your query right there? Check the dimension map. check for the tree or the rollup query structure you defined in cube manager. does it get reflected here? Check the measures you have defined. Do they all appear here? If these check are all positive, try building a cube in transformer. You get a mdc file. If any check fails, go back to the analysis model and check your model. You can diagonize this by ommiting the dimensions in the build template panel.

If you can't get the MDL file also, then check for the asc file. If the ac file is generated, check for the data in the asc file. If the data is present and is correct, then check for the file locations in the powerplay panel of build template. check for the write access on these locations. check for the model cube file in the working directory. 

if you cant find the asc file, then there is something wrong with  the build program. check up the log file with process instance as name. search for *PI*.*

This file is descriptive enough to direct you to solve your problem on the peoplesoft side.

I think I can help you out with this. At the highest level, the check is to look for a MDL file. 
If MDL is available then you are close to getting your MDC.

->Open the MDL in Cognos Transformer. Check for the query. Is your query right there? Check the dimension map. check for the tree or the rollup query structure you defined in cube manager. does it get reflected here? Check the measures you have defined. Do they all appear here? If these check are all positive, try building a cube in transformer. You get a mdc file. If any check fails, go back to the analysis model and check your model. You can diagonize this by ommiting the dimensions in the build template panel.

I've got the following problem:

Consider a main report printing data from a "main" query that has some prompts. These prompts are passed from Process Scheduler.

Now, I want to add a subreport that is based on a "sub-query". No problem if the sub-query doesn't have prompts.
But if I want to use prompts in my subquery, I'm asked to enter them at runtime.

My question is: is there a way to pass these parameters from the main report to the subquery ?

I think in your process defination SQR flag -KEEP is on.
Take that out, because it create both .lis n .spf files.
Printer doesn't get .spf file, so got the error.

Visual Source Safe and PVCS are both file-oriented version control packages.  PVCS is more popular with "large iron" people because it's supported on multiple platforms, VSS is more popular with the Wintel crowd.  I've also used TLib, which is real popular with vertical market product developers who need to maintain multiple versions of their product, simultaneously.  The project I'm currently on is about to install ClearCase, which is their corporate standard (I haven't used it yet).  Any of the four will work just fine for maintaining the SQR, COBOL, DMS and SQL files you'll accumulate in a PeopleSoft implementation.

But, you mentioned tables - there's no way to store a table in a VCS, unless you dump it to a text file and store it that way.  There's also no way to store an on-line object, and then revert back to it.  It's just one of the limitations of the system.

Through the process scheduler, I'm trying to print a Crystal report to a specific network printer.  My problem is that the report is printed to a different network printer, not the one I specified.  Shouldn't I be able to specify any printer when I run the report from the server and specify printer as the output.  Is there some sort of security problem that says I can't specify a printer so print the report to the default printer (where would the default printer have been set up?)?  Any ideas?

How do you activate the "nfx" button from the Tools Palette?
I have copied the PeopleSoft components into the NetObjects directory (i.e. c:\Netobj4. And what appears in the PeopleSoft Components toolbar are 4 look-alike "wheels".

When trying to do a drag & drop by clicking on the "PanelAppletComp", I get this error message:
"NFXComponentManager.CreateBrick Failed :PanelObj"

Kindly advise on how do I get around this problem...

Does anybody have good documentation for installing PeopleSoft on Terminal Server with Metaframe?  My installation is about 95% complete, but I am having troubles with the ODBC drivers in multi-user mode. I have run the ODBC install script and still cannot access this control panel from any user other than administrator.  This means I cannot connect in two-tier mode AND I cannot run Crystal Reports. (I'm on tools version 7.56, but do not think this is important) Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

If that's all you want to do, I'd suggest you either import it directly into Excel, or use Perl.  Naba Barkakati wrote a really good Perl book (although I can't recall the exact title) which includes an example that does exactly that.  Go up to Amazon and look around under Naba's name, it won't be hard to find.

When you are running the sqr on the server, you need to set you file/printer value to 
   "/tmp/ +P-d<youprintername>"  when you choose your output destination as printer. 

If you run the sqr on the client, then you would simply put 'lpt1' or 'lpt2' depending on your setup.

Does anyone know how to modify the Self Service Signon box?
We want to get rid of all the tabs on the signon box accept "User Information" .  I believe this is a generated JAVA Applet. 

We are implementing self service and currently use ACF2 for password validation.  We turned the security option on PS_LOCK to bypass validating the password on PSOPRDEFN, so the only validation is in our AFC2 system.
The problem now is the signon applet that gets generated has a tab to change your password.  Since we don't use the PSOPRDEFN password for validation, this function will not change the user password.

We worked with our IS Department, and found that these errors only seem to be occurring on PCs in our HRIS, HR, and Benefits area, and the common denominator seems to be PS.

This bank has got about 9 branches which are reporting to its head office at Hyderabad.  Presently all the operations of the bank are being carried out manually. Has anyone had a problem running Crystal 7.0 (not embedded within PS) and PS Crystal (5.0 PS 7.02)?  We purchased the 7.0 version to enable us to run reports from other systems but ran into problems when it was loaded on clients with PS 7.02.  There were changes to the basic crystal odbc connectivity that caused PS&#8217;s Crystal to stop working.  Has anyone been able to use both on one client system?  Has anyone had any problems with Crystal 6.0 and the PS version.

In the original query that you are using for the main report,  create a new expression, declare the type of the expression to be 'date' and select the prompt by clicking the 'Add Prompt' button. Select the desired prompt so that the text field of the expression box displays ":1" (for prompt #1, which may be the date prompt which you desire to carry to crystal). After the expression is created drag it and drop it in the fields of the query so that it also appears as one of the field. Now use this field value in crystal whereever you want.

Has anyone so far encountered double prompt issue in crystal??
I have a report with a couple of prompts with OR condition. When this is run from PS (Process Scheduler),leaving one of the prompts blank on the panel, it prompts me again at runtime. 
If anyone had any similar encounters please let me know.

I am currently using PeopleSoft HRMS 7.5 Global. To carry out data conversion, I am thinking of using SQA Robot in loading my data captured in Excel Format. I have the following questions which I hope I can get some answers:
1) I am finding difficulties locating the User Guide for SQA Robot 6.1 despite installing the SQA Robot that comes with PeopleSoft. Does anybody know how I can get hold of the User Guide ?

It seems that the delivered Org Chart process that PS has interfaced with Visio relies on Position data to establish a reporting heirarchy.  We do not use Position Management, so I'm creating my own department-level file to import into Visio's Org Chart Wizard.  All seems well until the last step when I get an error stating "Invalid Data.  Make each value in the 'reports to' field refer to a valid entry in another field."

The only row in the file that doesn't have a valid entry in the 'reports to' field is the department supervisor, who reports to a manager in another department.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this issue?

I just finished a project where we were implementing Time & Labor and had a similar requirement to be able to scan timesheets and get them into PeopleSoft.  We used a product called Teleforms for our solution.  The product is made by Cadiff Software.  It works fairly well.  Please let me know if you have any specific questions regarding the software.

We currently use the Web Client for remote access for T&L however have had poor performance. We go live on Citrix tomorrow. Citrix will act as a "go between" of sorts between the remote user and the web client. I can tell you that it is at least 10X the speed it was before implementing Citrix.  Hope this helps.

You need to find the .sqc where the escape sequences are located.  I can't recall the name but if you follow the path of .sqc's you'll eventually get there - it is pretty well documented so you will know it when you see it.  Add or replace  the sequence here save and run.  I remember having problems getting the last page to eject so I think I added a forced eject to the last line in the print routine.

Our shop had the same problem.  We also had a problem with some
users being able to run a report from one workstation and not another.  We finally traced it down to some mismatched dll files
I think and re-installed crystal on the problem workstations.  It
solved the problem.
