Changing the lenght of boxes thru Application Designer

i am trying to increase the length of the Journal Line Description box (from 30 char to 50 char) under Journal Entry-Lines-Add\Update Dispaly thru Application Designer.

after i am making the changes and building the current object the change is getting affected.but after making the entries and pressing the EDIT button it is giving me a SQL Error which gets corrected if i keep the description under 30 char.

any idea how to correct this ???
